About JSAD
Message from the Principal
Abu Dhabi Japanese School was established in 1978 as a Japanese school affiliated with the
Embassy of Japan in the United Arab Emirates. Since then, we have continuously developed our
educational activities with the aim of providing an education equivalent to that in Japan for
Japanese children living in Abu Dhabi.
Among the 94 Japanese schools around the world, our school is unique in that it is the only one
that formally accepts students of non-Japanese nationality, including students from the United
Arab Emirates. In addition to academic learning, we provide a wide range of educational
activities similar to those in Japan, including cleaning activities, student responsibilities, school
events, field trips, and school excursions.
We also actively promote cultural exchange with the UAE. Through school events celebrating
the founding of the UAE and National Day, we organize vibrant celebrations comparable to those
held in local schools, with the cooperation and support of Emirati parents.
At our school, daily school life itself serves as a place for international exchange and
intercultural understanding. For this reason, our faculty and staff strive to deepen their
understanding of UAE culture, customs, and religious values. Furthermore, we are advancing the
creation of classes and lessons based on the concept of universal design, aiming to become a
school where all children—both from Japan and the UAE—can enjoy learning and look forward
to each new day.
In order to achieve our educational goal of nurturing students with strong intellect, resilient
bodies, rich hearts, and a sense of international mindedness, all members of our staff work
together as one team, responding flexibly and collaboratively in our educational activities.
We also place great importance on fostering students who have dreams, take action toward
achieving them, and never give up. It is essential for children to believe in their own potential
and continue striving toward their goals in order to live successfully in the future. By valuing
daily efforts and continuing to take on small challenges, we hope that these experiences will lead
to significant growth.

Admission of UAE National Students
In 2004, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan—then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and now President of the UAE—requested that UAE national children be admitted to the Japanese School Abu Dhabi to receive a Japanese-style education.
The Government of Japan accepted this request, launching the “Program for the Admission of UAE National Students to the Japanese School Abu Dhabi.”
The program began in 2006 with the first group of Emirati children enrolled in the school’s affiliated kindergarten. Today, we accept up to four UAE national students per grade level.
Many parents are deeply interested in Japanese culture and are supportive of Japanese-style education, which emphasizes group activities, discipline in daily life and learning, proper manners, respectful greetings, and school cleaning routines. They highly value Japan’s high academic standards as well as its culture of courtesy and structure.
Some UAE students continue their education at JSAD for 12 years—from kindergarten through junior high school—and choose to study abroad in Japan. Those students have gone on to attend high schools in Tokyo and even advance to Japanese universities.
As of 2025, a total of 13 graduates have studied abroad in Japan, beginning with the first cohort, now in their fourth year of university. In March 2025, two more students—one male and one female—departed to pursue their education in Japan.
This program is a defining feature of the Japanese School Abu Dhabi, and we are proud to be nurturing future leaders who can serve as bridges between Japan and the UAE. As the partnership between our two countries continues to deepen, we feel an ever-greater sense of responsibility and purpose in our educational mission.
